Scope
Your HP Notebook PC (Laptop) is not charging the battery to 100%. It says it is plugged in, but not charging.
Solution
This is normal behaviour as by default all HP Notebook PCs and Mobile Workstations use HP Intelligent Charging.
What is HP Intelligent Charging?
HP Intelligent Charging provides additional protection against accelerated battery degradation by constantly monitoring the battery and detecting when the battery has been exposed to a high state-of-charge for several consecutive days.
When HP Intelligent Charging identifies that the battery has been in a high state-of-charge for multiple consecutive days, it automatically discharges the battery to 80% of design charge capacity. This adjusted full charge capacity prevents stress on the battery caused by the battery being in a high state-of-charge.
The battery is limited to 80% of design charge capacity until you exit the HP Intelligent Charging feature. To exit this feature, perform one of the following actions:
- Disconnect and reconnect the computer to AC power twice within a 10-minute period.
- Disconnect the computer from AC power and allow the battery to discharge at least 10%.
HP Intelligent Charging is still enabled and continues to monitor the battery exposure to a high state-of-charge. If the battery remains in a high state-of-charge for multiple consecutive days, HP Intelligent Charging again limits the available full charge capacity.
While HP Intelligent Charging is active, the battery cannot charge to 100% of the available full charge capacity. A heart icon is displayed over the Battery status icon in the Windows 11 system tray to display that the battery is limited to 80% of design charge capacity.
