Changes to Outlook and Skype login

What’s happening?

From Tuesday 17 September, you may notice a change in the appearance of the Sign in prompt when you launch either Outlook (desktop) or Skype for Business on your device.

Who will be affected?

This will only affect you if you are launching either Outlook or Skype for Business for the first time – for example on a brand new device or on a device that you have not used before.

This will happen on your University device and on any personal device on which you have installed Office 365 as part of the University’s Microsoft agreement

If you are affected, what will happen and what do you need to do?

You will be prompted for your username and password in a new way. This change to the Sign in prompt is expected behaviour and is no cause for alarm. It is a one-time authentication request and will only affect you the first time you sign into these apps.

The processes for University devices and personal devices differ slightly and are described below. A step by step guide with screenshots is also available.

What about older versions of Office?

We recommend you upgrade to Office 365.

· For University devices, download and install from the Software Center

· For personal devices, download and install from the Microsoft Office365 portal

Why is this happening?

We are enabling Modern Authentication in Office 365. This move from Basic Authentication will help protect us from phishing and other cyber-attacks.
